I integrate multiple opportunities for self-assessment in my course via peer feedback activities, rubrics, quizzes and interactive content.

Self-assessment activities help students reflect on their learning progress in relation to the goals of the course. In addition, you can use the results of the formative activities to create the next learning activities for your students at their specific level. For example, you can have differentiated projects or exercises in groups or workstations based on the outcomes of a formative activity.

 

Make sure to always take the time to introduce activities and tools to the students before beginning an activity. If students will be working with a FeedbackFruits peer activity, show the tool to the class before they are responsible for the activity. The same goes for reflection and rubrics. Take the time to explain rubrics and model how they can be used by students to assess their own work or that of their peers.

Self-assessment to prepare for peer assessment

Formative activities in FeedbackFruits provide opportunities for students to reflect on their performance and learning. First let students assess themselves and then let students see feedback from their peers and/or assess others. Make sure to create clear and accessible guidelines for assessment and feedback.

In addition to peer feedback, group member evaluation allows students to give feedback on participation and group work. Again, students should assess themselves before assessing the performance of a group member. This ensures that students are familiar with the assessment criteria and better understanding of the criteria leads to higher quality feedback (Filius, 2019).

Finally, make sure to keep the activities manageable by asking students only to assess one or two aspects of a learning objective or assignment and by providing guidance on what they are looking for, how they can tell if it is sufficient or insufficient, and what constructive feedback looks like.

Self-assessments in Brightspace

In Brightspace students can take ‘Self-Assessments.’ These are similar to quizzes, but are not attached to grades and give feedback during or at the end of the task. These are useful as checks for understanding when presenting new material or for preparing for a quiz or assessment.

Self-assessment in content

FeedbackFruits allows you to make content interactive by adding questions and answers during a video or to a document. You can also add feedback for certain incorrect answers to help further student understanding. This allows students to reflect on their understanding and be able to act on their strengths and weaknesses. Feedback can point out what material to review or lead the students to more practice, making the student responsible for improving their understanding. Finally, with analytics, the teacher can have an overview of student behavior and understanding and can tailor upcoming activities and content to better meet the needs of students.

Let students prepare for assessments online by interacting with new material, rubrics, and learning objectives before class. During synchronous or face-to-face meetings, engage students in discussions, reflections, and group work based on the pre-class activities.
